Are you, or do you know, an older person who could use a little extra support in the tasks that most of us take for granted?

Age UK Kensington and Chelsea offers an At Home service designed to support individuals who need a little extra help, which can sometimes mean the difference between them staying in their own homes and being required to move into supported accommodation – a costly and usually unwelcome necessity for many.

At Home support workers can help older residents of Kensington and Chelsea with any one of a number of activities, such as; shopping, cooking, doing laundry, cutting their toe nails and getting dressed in the morning.  The support workers also provide a regular friendly face for some of the most isolated residents in the borough, many of whom struggle to leave their homes.

The nominal fee charged to clients for these small but essential tasks is used to support the wider work of this Age UK branch which includes befriending services, information and advice, and day trips to reduce isolation amongst the borough’s older people.

At Home was launched with initial investment of over £100,000 from RBKC’s Innovative Projects Funding programme, a fund set up by the Council to support the local voluntary sector in finding new, sustainable ways of delivering services that benefit local residents and help tackle Council priorities.

The Innovative Projects Funding programme has now come to an end, but At Home continues to be a successful initiative. The At Home service is just one of fifteen funded projects that demonstrates that with an initial investment to help get new ideas off the ground, socially enterprising projects can be sustainable.
