A big hand to Natasha from SPID Theatre for sending in these inspiring words!
Within the Grade II listed building of Kensal House in Ladbroke Grove lies the Community Rooms. It is in this space where SPID Theatre lives and where they conduct free youth theatre workshops for young people ages between 8 to 25 years, and where they also stage professional shows such as their most recent production of iAm (ends tomorrow – October 25th).
SPID’s ethos as a theatre company is one that every local community should have. They create adventurous, immersive work in non-traditional spaces with a focus on indoor and outdoor council estate community spaces, encouraging involvement from disadvantaged local residents.
Every Tuesday afternoons at 4:45pm, the Far Far Away workshops take place for 8-13 year olds. These workshops unlock participants creative potential and takes you through time and space to discover something completely original, trains you in new skills and empowers you to put on a show at the end of each block. It is so wonderful watching the children at that age use their imagination in the numerous exercises that allow them to build on their communication and teamwork skills. Each session is different and covers everything from movement, voice, and music to acting, set, sound and lighting design. It really is so magnificently diverse; each week brings a whole new excitement!
A different workshop facilitator is selected per block and are asked to bring in their expertise depending on what play has been selected. And the children involved range from every background and neighborhood that it is riveting to see them all work and play together.
I really enjoy working with this company because of its innovation, openness and focus on community development through the arts. Come and discover more!
