And now for something completely different… Brompton Library’s very own Stephanie Webb on a change in the air, down on the Old Brompton Road…
Are you a lapsed library member, or is joining the library one of those things you always meant to do but never got round to it? Let me tempt you in with an update on how libraries may no longer be those quiet, slightly intimidating places you remember from years ago!
The big news for Kensington and Chelsea residents is that you can now use your RBKC library cards in all the libraries in Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham and you can return your items to whichever library is most convenient for you. The stock in all these libraries is visible on our catalogue so you can click and collect from whichever library is nearest you.
Brompton library is a hidden gem you could easily walk past without realising it was there as it has a small entrance on Old Brompton Road but opens up like a tardis! Walk through the entrance past the displays of new books and then you enter a light, airy space with plenty of comfy seating. Sit and read the paper or magazines (or bring in your tablet and make use of the wi-fi), browse the bookshelves (or the DVD shelves or the music cd shelves) or our information wall.
Gone are the days of waiting months to borrow best-sellers – with the stock of three boroughs available to us all but the most popular titles should be available with little delay.
If you want something a little more interactive we have reading group once a month and a computer/laptop/tablet help session every Tuesday afternoon for the over 50’s where you can get advice on a one-to-one basis from our expert volunteers. We also run a short course on Saturday mornings (bookable in advance) which runs for 4 weeks and gives you a good grounding in computer basics from using the mouse to setting up an email account and searching the web.
For those of you with children (or grandchildren) we run regular Baby Rhymes Times and Storytimes, including one on Saturday mornings which is great for parents who work during the week.
Our new events programme covering September to December will be available from September. All this information and more can be found on our website
