Local resident, Margot Kerr has written an article about a dance group for people with learning disabilities, sensory impairment and physical disability that she helps organise in Abingdon ward on a weekly basis.
As parents, we know that for people with a learning disability there is a daily challenge in finding appropriate, meaningful and enjoyable activity with which to fill the endless empty hours. Often their day can be reduced to a trip to the shops or the park and with little social interchange there can be real isolation.
The Pre-AMICI Expressive Dance Group is for young and older people with learning disabilities, sensory impairment and physical disability is held weekly at St.Philip’s Church Hall, Abingdon ward. Now in its tenth year, the class is run by parents tutored by AMICI Dance Theatre Company and is a friendly, lively two hours.
Attending an AMICI class changes that monochrome world into an exuberant, joyful Technicolor place where friendships develop and are sustained. The participants find a place in which they belong and the whole is enhanced immeasurably by the presence of generous spirited, able young volunteer dancers, artists and musicians who under the auspices of AMICI bring much merriment and the outside world to our membership.
The AMICI approach is to nurture the joy of self-expression through dance whilst gently drawing the student toward working with and relating to others and each contribution is celebrated.
The level of exercise and involvement is always tailored to the individual.
There is an important social dimension to the group whereby refreshments and chatter conclude the evening and celebrations mark birthdays, high days and holidays. A very good time is had by all!
